We are adding a new facet to our ranch and are proud to be one of a handful of farms in Louisiana (and according to my research, the ONLY one that has our Lowlines featured ONLINE) that will feature the Lowline Miniature Cow.
We decided to add Lowline breed to our ranch for several reasons. We have limited space and Lowlines take up less space and eat less than large cows but maintain a higher percentage of quality beef. Lowlines can produce 70% of the ribeye area on 1/3 the feed of animals more than twice their size. This allows a stocking ratio of 2.2 (or more) to 1. The obvious result is that up to 54% more beef may be produced from a given pasture with smaller cattle. Known health benefits of Lowline beef: more omega-3 fatty acids, more conjugated linoleic acid (a potent cancer-fighter), less total fat and calories, less omega-6 (linked to several disorders and diseases), and less risk of bacterial contamination due to the higher pH of the cowu2019s digestive tract if grass-fed. Lowline beef is being served as a gourmet food by some of the worldu2019s leading chefs.
Lowlines are descended from Australian Angus cattle. They are hornless and are known to be extremely docile and easy on fencing. Our Lowlines donu2019t go near the fences. They are healthy and the majority has no trouble calfing. A bull matures to approx 43u201d and 800-1100 lbs and a cow to approx 39u201d and 500-700lbs.
The Lowlines are the best quality miniature cow on the market in terms of the beef they produce. There is a great demand for them u2013 especially the heifers and bred cows. We have imported all our Lowlines from all over the US and plan on selling our calves starting with our 2011 crop. We have 3 cows and a bull calf and will be breeding this spring. We will keep 1 bull calf for the dinner plate and will be selling the other 2 calves. Even though we donu2019t plan on showing, we purchased the best quality in terms of body bulk based on winning bloodlines. Our bull is DNA tested and all our Lowlines are registered with the American Lowline Registry.
