Research Analysis Essay on Violence

Violence is found throughout the entire world and it affects a great deal of people. Violence is so deadly it "accounts for 1.4 million deaths per year. This corresponds to over 3800 people killed every day." (Violence Prevention). As Thomas Merton writes it, "Violence is essentially wordless, and it can begin only where thought and rational communication have broken down." This quote describes how violence only starts when individuals choose to ignore each other and it ends up with them hurting more people than helping. Violence comes in all types of forms such as: cultural violence, youth violence, physical wars and suicide.
In the past and even today many cultures have suffered from cultural violence because they are a certain race or because they have a certain belief. Millions of slaves lost their lives the day the triangular slave trade happened. They were taken from Africa and shipped to the new world to be "whipped, shackled, hanged, beat, burned, mutilated, branded, and imprisoned slaves." (Boundless). Nobody even thought twice to speak out about how they were being treated and what was happening to them. Society does not want violence but they refuse to talk about how to fix it and how to change it. Henry David Thoreau once said, "There are thousands who are in opinion opposed to slavery and to the war, who yet in effect do nothing to put an end to them" (Pg 103). Thoreau is trying to tell his audience that many people in society do not like how people are slaves and how all these bad things happen to them. But, they refuse to do anything about it and continue to let slavery happen just because the color of their skin. They will not stand up and speak out to what the problem is and that is when communication is lost and the violence continues. When someone's beliefs, values, language, practices or even skin color are violated it is all taken part as cultural violence.
Violence is not just abused when it comes to someone's race, it can also arise between different countries. Wars have killed millions of people. September 1, 1939, marked the date that the deadliest war that would take place in history. Graph 1 is an example of all the countries that took place in World War Two and the color that they are highlighted is based on how many people died.

The graph above shows us how violence can affect people all around the world. Over seventy million people dying around the world because of one war. In ABC's news article, Worldwide War Deaths Underestimated, Steven reinsburg says " researchers estimate that 5.4 million people died from 1955 to 2002 as a result of wars in 13 countries. These deaths range from 7,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo to 3.8 million in Vietnam." (Reinburg). Many people think that war is peace but all war does is cause more violence and more deaths. When 5.4 million people die in a matter of fifty years how can society really believe that war brings peace? Violence is the war humans need to fight.
Many may think that youth violence is not a big deal in schools and in younger ages but it happens to almost one in every four kids. Bullying is one example of youth violence that is seen in almost every single school. When kids are bullied they "can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues." (What Is Bullying). This type of violence is not physically hard but mentally hard and it can tear a kid apart because they believe they are not good enough. When it comes to bullying it is not just the victim that can be hurting but also the abuser. Although they may be considered bullies, they can mentally also be hurting. " Kids who bully others can also engage in violent and other risky behaviors into adulthood" (What Is Bullying). It is crazy to think that bullies do these things because what they think is helping them is actually killing them. Bullies think that engaging in all these bad activities is going to help them but in reality it is just setting them up for failure. They do not just set themselves up but they also set the person they are bullying up, which is hurting both of them. Violence does not just come upon a kid it happens when they are out of school and at home, when communication with family lacks.
Youth violence can lead to suicide, the type of violence to ones self that can mentally make someone not want to be in this world anymore. But it does not just affect younger kids, it also affects older generations. According to the Centers for Disease Control in 2017: "Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,000 people"(Gordon). Suicide causes many people to die, yet the world does not do much to prevent it. Thousands suffer from this because they have nobody to talk to or they just do not feel as if they belong in this world anymore. Suicide does not just affect one type of person "People of all genders, ages, and ethnicities can be at risk. Suicidal behavior is complex, and there is no single cause." (Gordon). Suicide can happen to anyone and it is 100% preventable it is just about noticing the signs in someone. People should never have suicidal thoughts though because life should never get that hard for them. But when the lose of communication happens with the world around them it leads to irrational thoughts believing they do not belong in this world anymore.
From a different perspective though, there has been a few times when rational thought and communication have been used and violence has been prevented. Peace Treaties have been put in place to prevent violence. The Treaty that ended all violence in World War I was the Treaty of Versailles. "World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919." (Kaiser). Years later after this peace treaty the League of Nations was formed and many nations joined together to become allies. Of course the treaty stopped the violence and brought together some nations, but for only twenty years. After the Treaty of Versailles was written, Germany had thirty three billion in reparations, Germany resented many nations, Germany started World War Two.

The political cartoon shows how the four allied nations, France, America, Italy and Japan, are holding down Germany and forcing them to take the "Pill", which is all of the blame for the war and causing all of the destruction. Many believe that The Treaty of Versailles was a failure and was one of the main reasons that Germany attacked Poland to start World War II in 1939. Peace Treaties sound like they fix all the problems of war, but they really are just like putting a bandaid over a bullet wound. Communication happens during a peace treaty, but rational though usually ends up falling short so violence remains.
Violence is found in all types of forms and affects all people. Cultural violence, youth violence, war violence and suicidel violence are all important examples. In Homer's epic poem, The Iliad, he shows us that violence is a universal poison and that it affects everyone. Violence has been around since the beginning of time and society has still yet to learn how to handle it. And will never be solved unless people come together and understand and communicate with each other. Until people learn how to talk and rationally think nothing will ever change and violence will continue to happen.
My professor told me to provide a research paper, and I had no idea how to do it. Thank God, I've found a sample here. I used it and wrote a paper myself.
